MPA managers, fishing communities, and agencies
We welcome new SMART Seas participants from Western Indian Ocean countries interested in trialing our approach. Please contact us via email to request a training or receive training materials and supporting framework documents. We will apply for grant funding to plan training events on site if there is sufficient interest. We can provide remote support to WIO MPAs with phone and Skype meetings. We also welcome you to come learn about the SAM approach in one of the Kenyan or Tanzanian MPAs . Researchers Our goal is to help managers and scientists communicate more effectively and efficiently about research and conservation needs. If you are planning research in a Western Indian Ocean MPA, we encourage you to work closely with the management agency to target current management needs. We can connect you to the appropriate manager if needed and we provide reporting forms that were designed by MPA managers to facilitate communication from researchers to managers. Please contact us for these forms or MPA contacts. The primary research need of the SMART Seas Programme itself currently is in social science and fisheries biology. Students We welcome student interns from Western Indian Ocean nations interested in attachment positions within MPAs in Kenya and Tanzania. Please contact us via email and let us know where you would like to work and for how long. We do not have existing funding to support interns, but can help point you to potential funding sources and link you with agency contacts in nations of interest. There are also some opportunities for international students to assist with SMART Seas remotely by helping with data entry and analysis, SMART Seas correspondence, database development, and web support. We can accept international students interested in volunteering on site, but do not have housing accommodation. Graduate students (masters or PhD) are welcome to contact us about opportunities to engage with SMART Seas MPAs and fishing communities. Our current needs are for social science assessments and for studies on mangroves and coastal forests. Media We welcome partners from the media who are interested in human interest and conservation stories related to marine systems in the Western Indian Ocean. Please contact us and we can help ensure you meet with relevant people for interviews and filming. |
